When Robert Sanchez, the President of the United States, seems to espouse views and visions for America that are in direct contrast with the populace, as well as circumventing the Constitution, intervention is needed. However, as a voracious reader, I was pleasantly surprised with the plot and character development. Carl Baker definitely has the expertise to tell a story based on his career experiences. Food for thought, the author takes us on a roller coaster ride filled with danger and intrigue when compatriots go head to head with a corrupt and murderous Commander in Chief. The oval office is filled with a band of followers who will do anything to ensure that power remains in the President's hands and that his self serving agenda is realized. Not only is the President and his band of murderous thugs taken to task but the reader is confronted with an eye opening indictment. Clearly inferred by the author is the premise that every law bidding citizen is responsible for ensuring that God stays on the bench, and the constitution of our great land remains upheld. A good read.
This fictional novel updates a unique American plot line of how ordinary men restore our Constitutional government, first explored in the movie, Seven Days in May (1964). This movie depicts a politically unpopular President fighting to remain in legitimate control from rogue military officers. However, in To Defend Against All Enemies, the plot line is reversed, albeit all too realistically, about how a politically popular President secures campaign donations from drug cartels in exchange for their own demands. Once this agreement is exposed, the President resorts to illegal means to retain control. The Presidents protagonists display courage and a love of country not unlike what Edward Hale attempted to explore with, The Man Without A Country
If you believe, as Carl Baker does, that the U.S. is in trouble and that dark conspiracies originating in the Oval Office are at work eating away at the foundations of the country, then this is the novel for you.
If you don't believe any of this to be true, that these are the overworked fantasies of a far right minority unhappy with the reality of a Democrat occupying the White House, then "To Defend Against All Enemies" will provide a window into a certain kind of mindset, and therefore is well worth the read.
No matter which side of the political spectrum you find yourself on, however, "To Defend Against All Enemies" effectively does what it's supposed to do--makes you think (for good or ill) and gets you turning the next page.
Carl Baker's novel is a believable and succinct look into the workings of police surveillance in high-very high-places, and how difficult it might be to reveal and prove criminal, even destructive intent by the highest powers of government. It is as fresh as today's headlines and a warning to all of us to be vigilant and pay attention to what goes on in the governing of this nation. Was it Benjamin Franklin who said we have a democracy...if we can keep it?
The author has woven a plot of executive power gone awry, a husband and father's desire for safety for both family and nation, the dangers inherent in police and undercover work, and love of country that motivates everything he does. Mr. Baker leaves us dangling with a final early morning phone call, harbinger to more bad news, and a possible sequel. Good job!
I loved this book. It was a great read and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next.
Well written for a first effort. Shows just what is wrong with our country today and makes one wonder where are our 7 brave men.
This is an intriguing novel of White House politics and power gone seriously awry. A small group of patriotic men realize that they must act to save America and its values. While the book is fiction, the story itself is fully plausible. The insight and experience of the author's many years in law enforcement add authenticity to the writers "story telling" style.
It was difficult to put the book down. Highly recommended.
